Teeth Whitening Q&A

What is teeth whitening?

Teeth whitening is the process of lightening the natural shade of your teeth by removing discolored stains. Also called tooth bleaching, this treatment involves using peroxide-based solutions to gently lift stained molecules in your tooth enamel.

What sets professional whitening apart from over-the-counter (OTC) products is that it can remove nearly all types of stains, such as:

Extrinsic stains

Extrinsic stains sit near the surface of your tooth enamel, the protective layer on the outside of your teeth. OTC products, such as whitening strips, toothpaste, and mouth rinses, can temporarily remove some extrinsic stains, but they can’t reach the deeper layers of your teeth.

Intrinsic stains

Intrinsic stains are tougher to remove than extrinsic stains. They penetrate the deeper layers of your teeth, resulting in a darker, yellower appearance. Only professional-grade teeth whitening solutions can remove intrinsic stains.

Who needs teeth whitening?

Tooth stains develop for many reasons. Diet, lifestyle choices, and genetics all affect the color of your teeth. Factors that influence the color of your teeth include:

  • Coffee and tea
  • Red wine
  • Soy sauce
  • Marinara sauce
  • Sugary soda and colas
  • Certain medications, including antibiotics
  • Tobacco use (such as smoking and chewing tobacco)

Another important factor that affects the shade of your teeth is the thickness of your enamel. People born with thick enamel naturally have whiter teeth than those with genetically thin enamel.

Teeth grinding and injuries can also deteriorate your enamel, making your teeth more prone to discoloration.

What happens during professional teeth whitening?

The team at Moderna Dental Studio uses Zoom! teeth whitening.

First, the team protects your gums and lips with a special covering. This is especially helpful if you have sensitive gums. Next, they apply a peroxide-based gel to your teeth and activate the solution with a specialized ultraviolet (UV) light.

For the best results, the team repeats this process two more times. Each session takes about 15 minutes. The entire teeth whitening process takes about 45-60 minutes. At the end of your visit, your teeth should look noticeably whiter. Results vary, but many patients see up to eight shades of whitening.

You can maintain your results by practicing good oral hygiene habits, scheduling regular teeth cleanings, and avoiding foods and beverages that stain your teeth.
