Pediatric Dentistry Q&A

What is pediatric dentistry?

Pediatric dentistry is a type of oral health care focused on maintaining and improving children’s dental health. Caring for children takes specialized training to understand the unique oral health challenges younger patients face.

The team at Moderna Dental Studio has a broad range of experience in providing individualized care for pediatric patients.

When does my child need pediatric dentistry?

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends bringing your baby in for their first visit no later than six months after their first tooth emerges. This preventive visit gives the team an opportunity to identify potential risks to your child’s oral health, such as early signs of tooth decay or a tongue tie.

After this initial visit, children should see the team at least once every six months to maintain their oral health. These visits also allow you a chance to talk to the team about questions or concerns you have regarding your child’s oral health.

What happens during pediatric dentistry visits?

Most pediatric visits consist of three primary parts:

Dental exam

A dental exam is a complete assessment of your child’s oral health. During this visit, the team visually examines your child’s teeth, gums, jaw, and face. They check for abnormalities, such as oral lesions, abnormal growths, tooth decay, and gum disease.

The team may also perform X-rays to view the underlying structures of your child’s teeth and gums.

Teeth cleaning

While brushing and flossing your child’s teeth are essential to preserving their oral health, only a teeth cleaning can effectively remove plaque and tartar (hardened plaque). First, the team uses specialized dental tools to remove plaque, tartar, and bacteria.

Next, they brush and floss with professional-grade tools. Finally, the team polishes your child’s teeth and applies a strengthening fluoride treatment.

If your child needs any special dental treatments, such as a filling or dental sealant, the team can perform those procedures during these pediatric visits.

After the cleaning, the team may recommend diet, lifestyle modifications, or oral hygiene habits that can help protect or improve your child’s oral health.
