Dental Bridge Q&A

What is a dental bridge?

A dental bridge is a fixed appliance that can replace one or more missing teeth. Similar to an architectural bridge, a dental bridge consists of an artificial tooth, called a pontic, surrounded by anchoring teeth, or abutments, on each side.

The pontic attaches to a dental crown on each side. These crowns fit directly over your surrounding teeth to support the missing tooth in the center.

What are my options for a dental bridge?

The team at Moderna Dental Studio has three types of dental bridges they may use to restore your smile:

Traditional bridge

A traditional bridge is the most common type. It consists of a pontic surrounded by two dental bridges that fit over your abutment teeth. A traditional bridge is effective when you have healthy teeth on each side of your missing tooth.

Cantilever bridge

Similar to a traditional bridge, a cantilever bridge uses a dental crown to hold the appliance in place. However, it contains only one crown rather than two.

Because a traditional bridge is more durable than a cantilever bridge, the team recommends the latter only when you don’t have healthy teeth on both sides of your missing tooth.

Maryland bridge

If you don’t have any healthy abutment teeth, a Maryland bridge can restore your smile. This appliance consists of a pontic attached to a metal or ceramic framework. The framework fits over your surrounding teeth for support.

What happens during the dental bridge process?

It typically takes at least two visits to plan and place a dental bridge.

After taking any necessary scans, the team prepares your abutment teeth for dental crowns. They file and reshape the affected abutment teeth to ensure the crown looks natural rather than bulky. Next, they take impressions to create your crowns and the rest of the bridge.

Creating a custom-made dental bridge takes about 2-3 weeks. In the meantime, the team fits you for a temporary bridge to protect your teeth. When you return, they replace the temporary restoration with your custom-made bridge.

After making any necessary adjustments for the right look and fit, the team cements your bridge in place.
